This Saturday the local Urban Sketchers group, of which I am a member, will be doing a talk and demo of our sketching kits at the main branch of the Oakland Public Library at Lake Merritt from 3 – 5 pm.
The following weekend, the 1st Annual West Coast Sketchcrawl will be happening in Berkeley, San Francisco, and Oakland.

I had never been to a car show before, thought it would be fun, not only to see next year’s designs, but to sketch. It was pretty crowded, I took a couple photos, and sketched from that. The Academy of Art University has a large and wonderful antique car collection as it turns out. They presented a handful, including some of their smallest and most eclectic, really fun. This is an example, designed by a man who normally designed aircraft. It was designed/built after WWII as economical, basic transportation, very affordable. I’m not sure I did it’s funny shape justice. When you look at it directly from the front it looks somewhat like a frog with it’s bug-eyed headlamps!
The Albany Public Library hosted a viewing of the second presidential debate, with commentator George Lakoff. It was great to watch it with a room full of people interested in the future of our country who have a good sense of humor besides. George Lakoff had very enlightening comments on why the deep divisions of today exist, and how they could be changed. He is the author of Don’t Think Of An Elephant! as well as many other books.
People fought hard for our right to vote – so get down to your local polling place tomorrow! Please study the issues, they are often not what they appear to be. Consult with trusted sources to get an understanding of these issues.
Taking Bart, getting out at the Fruitvale station, put us right into the Dia de los muertos celebration on October 28th. This is a day to honor your loved ones who have passed along to another world, and to celebrate life. My two sketching friends and I stayed til the crowds got too thick to be able to draw without getting our elbows bumped!
It’s here—the 2012 Box Art Auction. I can’t wait to see what all the different artists have created out of a simple 5.5″ square block of wood! It goes on from 6 to 9 pm tonight. It’s your last chance to see these wonderful creations before they go home with their new owners. Will you be one of them? ALL profits go towards supporting ProArts organization which does a lot of outreach to the community and furthers the arts in so many ways.

This building is rather nice, it has always seemed a shame that it’s sort of buried in a neighborhood with streets and houses all around so that you can’t really get back and get a good view of it. I sketched the side, from where a row of apartments was added a dozen or so years ago.
