This was pretty fun, they actually thought to include an artist-focus on a quiet race day last Saturday. They were good to us, gave us coffee in the morning, lunch at noon, some cool schwag, and a show at the end of the day. ArtSpan was a partial sponsor, and documented the day http://www.flickr.com/photos/artspan/sets/72157635362810297/
Here’s my second 2-hour oil sketch from the day — the water needs work, but I like the colors. It’s an impossible view of the Bay Area, with Mt Tam in the background just for fun!
here’s a preview detail of an unfinished painting of a house on Lincoln Street just a few blocks away from the Frank Bette center in Alameda. I think I’ll call it “Island Living” – it’s really all about the speed limits, 25-35 mph all over the island!
The Oakland art scene is getting better all the time. At Open Studios this year my group has teamed up with another group just a few doors down and between us we have over 80 artists all in one place! (I know, I know, the postcard said “79”, but we had one more join us!).
(Newsbreak: we had one drop out, so if any of you are interested, it’s a one-time last-minute chance to join – ask me for more details)

If you are a sketcher, would like to try sketching out doors, or are not a sketcher….

My Sunflowers painting was nominated for an art blog still life recognition! If you have a minute, vote for your favorite starting tomorrow http://bit.ly/W0ovaJ
My good friend Jana Bouc nominated this painting on the Making a Mark blog. She has told me that she fell in love with the painting — it’s not just because she knows me! I consider her a dedicated and careful painter and really appreciate her vote of confidence. She has a painting up for vote as well at http://makingamark.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/portrait-nominations-for-best-artwork-MAMAwards2012.html
It’s here—the 2012 Box Art Auction. I can’t wait to see what all the different artists have created out of a simple 5.5″ square block of wood! It goes on from 6 to 9 pm tonight. It’s your last chance to see these wonderful creations before they go home with their new owners. Will you be one of them? ALL profits go towards supporting ProArts organization which does a lot of outreach to the community and furthers the arts in so many ways.
Here’s one side of the “box” I made – come see the others tonight at
150 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, Oakland
The Alameda Plein Air Paint Out starts Sunday with a “Quick Draw” in the morning, and we’ll hang the paintings in the afternoon 1:00 to 5:00 pm. This will take place in the Marketplace of Alameda’s 28th annual Park Street Art & Wine Fair.
The Park Street Art & Wine Faire is located on Park Street, between Encinal Ave and Buena Vista Ave.
I went back to Cavallo Point to start a new painting for the Epperson Paint Out, going on this week. This is the sketch so far – I’m thinking of ditching the bridge – it’s usually so corny and overdone! Maybe I’ll hide it with more tree foliage.
The fog was drifting in through the golden gate when I started, but the warmth of the day drove it out and theb it was gone. I hiked up the hill and ate my sandwich on the trail.
Open Studios starts next weekend! It will be open all over the East Bay, including Richmond, El Cerrito, Albany, Berkeley, Oakland, etc. it will be open two weekends in a row, June 2–3 and June 9–10 from 11am-6 pm.
