the “village” of Mendocino

Lansing Street - Mendocino
Lansing Street – Mendocino

As the main commercial district, it’s pretty lively, much more so than it looks here. We could call this an experiment in seeing what a town looks like sans cars, people, dogs or even random birds. The Plein Air Painters of Mendocino will be having their annual show just a few blocks away at the Oddfellows Hall, on Kasten & Ukiah streets during the month of March (starting on the 7th). I will be participating in this show, it should be fun!

Frank Bette Plein Air Paintout-Old Crane by the Ferry landing

While trying to squeeze in a few paintings for the last week’s plein air paintout in Alameda, someone told be that this old crane by the ferry landing at the north end of the island will be torn down soon. If we had the relative strength of an ant, we wouldn’t need these, I think it’s fascinating how we create these things which help us do amazing feats of construction which we couldn’t otherwise do.
A lot of people commented on this painting. You can see it at the Frank Bette Center for the Arts at 1601 Paru Street, Alameda August 10-September 29. There may be a reception, if so, I’ll post that soon.

Doe Library, Hearst Mining buildings on campus

I finally got back up to the Doe Library with my sketchbook to finish the sketch I started a year ago. My sketch-buddy Cathy and I then went up to check out the Hearst Mining building which is now set off with landscaping rather than pavement and a bus stop and catch-all area in front. it really is a beautiful building.
